Art Critique

In CyberARTS today we were given an assignment to critique a piece of art on three things, Imitation Qualities, Formaition Qualities and emotion qualities. I chose A piece of art called "Rain, Steam and   Speed-The great Western Railway" by Turner.

The painting shows imitation qualities because near the left corner you can see distant detail of the front of a train on a railway coming out of the distance. You can also see a faint design of a bridge almost as if the train has passed the bend, coming out of the vanishing point. The artist has also used the appropriate colors and shades such as the bold black for the train and the mixture of yellow, purple and white to create a somewhat look of an evening sky.

This painting shows formal Qualities because the artist has showed Emphasis on Unity such as the choice of colors, he chose soft colors like yellow and purple and combined it with values and bitter colors such as black, white and brown. The artist has blended the colors as if they are one color. He has also used different brush strokes to Emphasis different textures such as the railway bridge and the sky. The painting also gradually from the left corner to the right corner goes lighter to darker with the shades of colors.

This painting shows emotions and expressive qualities because of the colors the artist chose for example the purple and yellow colors convey a calm emostion for the sky as if to say everything is at peace. The lower half of the page shows anger to display that nobody is at peae. The artist has created a mood for people  so when they look at the art they can feel the peace and anger.
